One of the best meals I've had in Manchester. The view out the window is fantastic and the ambiance is wonderful. If you are looking for a nice romantic dinner, this is the place. On first glance the menu seems small and limited, but there is sure to be something to please just about anyone. I would suggest either an appetizer or dessert if you are used to stuffing yourself. The portions aren't huge but they are adequate and include a small salad and bread. The prices are a little high but your meal will be worth every penny.

We love Mistral's! My wife & I go there with friends every time we get back to Manchester. The food is superb and creative. The service is attentive & polite. The ambiance is spectacular. I remember the previous establishment, the Tollgate Inn, from way back when. Mistral's has kept some of that old world charm to the place while creating a menu of fusion between the old & the new. The owners, Cheryl & Dana (chef) are very welcoming and make us feel right at home when ever we go there. If you are looking for the best dining experience in SoVt, then this is the place for you.

Our favorite local restaurant for special evenings. Chef Dana and his wife Cheryl run this place beautifully as they have for years. Always updating the menu yet keeping it classic is what makes Mistrals great. And it is only a mile away.

Terrible service by a harpie faced hostess, along with a 45 minute wait for a reserved table. The food was great but hard to enjoy with the pissed off mood we were all in. Don't go - the place is stuffy and the staff moribund at best

Definitely very good food, excellent service, and phenomenal ambiance. Gets 4 stars due to price. Portions were filling but there was nothing to bring home even after bread, salad, and entrée. Wine list was top notch and the waiter was very knowledgeable about it. Lights on the river at night provided amazing scenery.

You want truly exceptional French food in Vermont? Do you like fine dining, expect great service, but also want a place you can get into without being dressed to the nines? Mistral is it. Slightly off the beaten path (even for VT) but worth the trip, Mistrals even has a dedicated gluten free menu. That's very unusual for a French restaurant, in my experience. The service is terrific, the ambiance warm, cozy & romantic, and the wine list very good. My friends and I dined on stuffed salmon, rack of lamb, roast chicken, and really excellent French Onion soup (gluten free even!). Everything was perfectly cooked to order and delicious! The only area where I would suggest an improvement is the choice of gluten free rolls. Don't get me wrong, it's both unusual and very thoughtful that mgmt here has included a GF bread selection, but the rolls of choice are lacking in flavor and rather dry. There are some better choices out there these days, incl any of the breads/rolls by "Against The Grain". Maybe next time. The pace of the meal was just right, and really everything from start to finish was a wonderful experience. Mistrals is not cheap, but if you want fine dining near Manchester VT, this is THE place.

I liked it. A lot. Not drive 90 minutes to get there for a dinner like, but certainly 40. You know what I mean? Some places you will just drive to pretty much no matter how far. Others, meh, if you happen to be going by. This is a 40 minute one for me. Located at the site of the last Toll Gate in Vermont, Mistral's offers French cuisine in an intimate riverside setting. Wine Spectator "Award of Excellence" since 1994. Chef-owned, Dinner from 6 pm. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Yada, yada, yada. A decent wine selection. We had a fabulous bottle of red and an okay bottle of white. Appetizers of pate (it was moose so a bit on the dry side and remined one patron of sliced canned dog food- yuck). I had the warm beet salad with spinach, glazed walnuts and feta cheese topped with a delicate champagne vinagrette. That was wonderful. Another was the special of the cold soup that looked good and while I did not try it, she said it was terrific. I trust her. I had the tuna tartare and it was very good. For something different and out of the way, this would be a fun place to go.

We ate here the night after Christmas, we were prepared to be wowed based on reviews I read here on Yelp, and we just weren't. We ordered the two appetizer specials of the evening, one was seared diver sea scallops, which were delicious, but there were only two on the plate. We are used to smaller portions at finer restaurants, but this really strained the concept. We also had a chilled pate spread with toasted baguette slices and some kind of fruit compote on the side, it was pretty good, but we have had better. For entree, we ordered the chateaubriand for two. The table-side presentation and service was lovely, but the food itself was just... meh. Again, we've had better. The dessert menu was spectacularly unremarkable, so much so that nothing jumped out at us, even though we typically always order a dessert to share when we dine out. In fact, the entire menu was pretty sparse, nothing very imaginative or inventive, and not very many choices in general. Bottom line: it was an okay meal. It was not a $200 meal. We may try it again, simply because there aren't many great dining options in the Manchester/Stratton area, and since this one has been rated so highly, we'd be willing to give it another shot. Maybe. On a side note, we were seated next to a large group that included 2 small children, one of whom was about 2 years old, and very cranky, undoubtedly due to the late hour. I love children, I have 5 myself, and I also have a 2 year old. My husband & I go out to dinner to have some quiet time away from our children. Parents, PLEASE--you may think your children are just delightful, and undoubtedly they are, but they just don't belong at a high-end restaurant at 8pm. And definitely not at the table beside me.

Food was excellent. The setting is lovely. The older man who was our waiter was cold, inattentive, and slightly rude. Could have been a great experience with a friendly waiter. We will not be rushing back.

My favorite in Manchester. I go at least 3 times a year. Great and attentive service. Lovely setting by the stream so ask for a window table. The duck is always my favorite and I would also recommend the beet salad, and any of their beef and chicken dishes. Great place for a romantic dinner. You can dress up or go casual and you'll feel comfortable either way. Also very nice on New Year's Eve but book early.

Once upon a time, this was the Toll Gate Lodge, a restaurant in the old-fashioned style requiring jackets for men and even boys at dinner. While the "new" chef/owner has been making his mark for perhaps thirty years since those days, a lot of the old-fashioned heritage still lingers around the place, small cosy rooms, a small service bar, good linen, nice tableware, etc. The menu harkens back to former times, too, in that it is competently "continental" in it's French leanings and thicker sauces. Mistral's offers something no other restaurant can boast of, however: window seating along the back that overlooks a sweet, lamp-lit river. In the winter the river's blackness wends through the snow; in the summer the Vermont green describes it. Between the competent wine list, solid service, and quiet dining, Mistral's is the place to discover if you want to enjoy your dinner guests, provided you are not in search of the most avante garde menu. (note: it is on a back road just off the highway between Bromley and Manchester)

Good place to eat, their menu is interesting, having nice rear additions like frog legs, in case someone likes those. I would definitely recommend any of their appetizers, beet salad was great! Wine list is very good and service is top notch. Also, we enjoyed the view and sound of water and didn't want to leave..

Mistrals is our favorite special occasion restaurant in Manchester. The view of the flume at night is entirely romantic, and is matched by perfectly prepared cuisine. Chef Owner Dana really knows his stuff. Unlike so many restaurants these days, where everything is "A La Carte-to-death, your plate will have at least 4 types of veggies/starch beautifully presented. The wine list is superb. Cheryl, Dana's wife, is the perfect hostess and service is seamless. When out of towners visit, this is our #1 pick.

This restaurant is great! Chef Dana was super accommodating with my raw foods request. He made me a giant beautiful salad that satisfied. Delicious. Good looking wine list and a nice dining room atmosphere with a beautiful view out the back windows onto a running stream over bedrock. It's great. I find it a tough town to get a good vegetarian raw meal in Manchester, so when I find a place accommodating then I'm a happy visitor. Thanks chef Dana!
